What is Pilates?

pilates in kent The founder, Joseph Pilates, developed his own exercise programme some 75 years ago to aid his weak health and subsequently observed that when there was a weak or misaligned area in the body, a person tended to overcompensate or overdevelop another area. Therefore it was critical to not only correct the misalignment but also to re-educate the body so that injuries did not repeat themselves. He also believed that true well-being could be achieved through physical fitness and positive mental attitude.

Pilates brings mind and body together, focusing strongly on total concentration, balance, precision and breathing.

We all suffer from poor posture, from being slumped in front of a computer or the TV, by wearing high heels which throws the pelvis out of correct alignment or just by digging the garden.

We also suffer from stress, whether we realise or not, as a consequence of modern living.

These problems can manifest themselves in many ways, from headaches, fatigue, rounded shoulders, the classic low back pain, to general aches and not feeling good about yourself.

In the past, Pilates was particularly popular with dancers, gymnasts and athletes who recognised the benefits of this programme of mental and physical conditioning that gave them strength, flexibility and the all important link between mind and body.

Today, Pilates Matwork classes have become very popular with the general public of all ages and levels of fitness, some of which have never embarked on any form of physical fitness regime before and you can now find regular sessions included at formal gymnasiums and studios and they are used widely by Personal Trainers, Physiotherapists and Osteopaths.

pilates kent Now 54, I have always been involved in some sort of fitness since schooldays. I have tried most types of exercise and seen the varying quality of instruction at classes and gyms.

Having suffered from a bad back myself (probably due to poor technique, years of nursing and subsequent poor posture) in my search for relief I came across Pilates which I found changed my outlook on the fitness industry.

So I turned to instruction and my philosophy is to keep my classes small, friendly and inviting. Kinesiology has proven excellent at sorting body imbalances and demonstrating food incompatibilities.
